The Myanmar junta claims it has taken control of one of the most notorious scam facilities on the boundary with Thai territory, as it reclaims important land previously lost in the continuing domestic strife.

KK Park, located south of the border town of Myawaddy, has been synonymous with digital deception, money laundering and people smuggling for the previous five-year period.

Numerous individuals were lured to the complex with assurances of lucrative jobs, and then compelled to manage complex schemes, taking billions of money from affected individuals across the planet.

The armed forces, historically compromised by its associations to the fraud industry, now declares it has occupied the compound as it extends dominance around Myawaddy, the primary trade connection to Thailand.

Armed Forces Advancement and Political Objectives

In recent weeks, the armed forces has repelled insurgents in several regions of Myanmar, aiming to increase the number of territories where it can organize a scheduled poll, starting in December.

It presently hasn't mastered extensive areas of the state, which has been torn apart by conflict since a government overthrow in February 2021.

The election has been disregarded as a fraud by opposition forces who have vowed to prevent it in territories they hold.

Establishment and Growth of KK Park

KK Park began with a property arrangement in the first part of 2020 to build an commercial zone between the KNU (KNU), the armed ethnic organization which dominates much of this territory, and a unfamiliar HK publicly traded company, Huanya International.

Investigators think there are relationships between Huanya and a prominent Chinese underworld individual Wan Kuok Koi, often referred to as Broken Tooth, who has subsequently backed further deception centers on the boundary.

The complex expanded quickly, and is clearly visible from the Thailand territory of the border.

Those who were able to get away from it describe a violent regime enforced on the countless people, numerous from African nations, who were confined there, forced to operate extended shifts, with mistreatment and physical violence administered on those who did not manage to meet targets.

Current Actions and Announcements

A announcement by the military's official media stated its personnel had "liberated" KK Park, liberating over 2,000 workers there and taking possession of 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink internet equipment – extensively employed by fraud centers on the Myanmar-Thai frontier for digital activities.

The declaration blamed what it described as the "militant" KNU and local people's defence forces, which have been opposing the military since the coup, for wrongfully occupying the region.

The regime's claim to have shut down this notorious scam hub is almost certainly aimed at its main patron, China.

Beijing has been pressuring the military and the Thai government to take additional measures to end the illegal operations managed by Chinese organizations on their border.

Earlier this year numerous of China-based workers were taken out of scam facilities and transported on arranged aircraft back to China, after Thailand eliminated supply to power and fuel provisions.

Broader Landscape and Ongoing Activities

But KK Park is only one of at least 30 analogous compounds located on the boundary.

A large portion of these are under the protection of Karen armed units aligned to the regime, and many are currently operating, with numerous individuals managing scams inside them.

In fact, the backing of these armed units has been essential in helping the armed forces drive back the KNU and further resistance groups from land they captured over the past two years.

The junta now governs almost all of the highway connecting Myawaddy to the remainder of Myanmar, a target the military established before it organizes the opening round of the poll in December.

It has seized Lay Kay Kaw, a recent settlement created for the KNU with Japanese investment in 2015, a time when there had been hopes for permanent peace in Karen State following a national truce.

That constitutes a more significant blow to the KNU than the capture of KK Park, from which it did get limited funds, but where most of the economic gains went to pro-junta paramilitary forces.

A well-placed source has suggested that scam work is persisting in KK Park, and that it is possible the military occupied merely a section of the large-scale compound.

The contact also thinks Beijing is giving the Burmese junta inventories of China-based people it wants removed from the scam complexes, and transported back to stand trial in China, which may account for why KK Park was attacked.
