The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
