The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Smog Post Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities approved the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed air quality spiking around late evening to some of the worst levels seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the levels of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the city is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities annually in the capital.
