The Video Platform Grants Viewers Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to lessen the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service disclosed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a global launch. This advancement coincides with a increase in AI content, fueled by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost 10% of the quickest rising channels on a competing service exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is frequently nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to science explainers, and we intend to give people the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” commented a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The service shared that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 mn pieces of content are added to the app every day, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI-generated videos they watch by using the topic control setting in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the tool include news, fashion, cosmetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s guidelines oblige creators to label “realistic” artificially created content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will now attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to stop users from trying to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also introducing a $2m educational fund for professionals and institutions to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, during discussion over intentions to lay off a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. The platform reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
