Thousands Left Without Power in Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Severe Storms

Approximately 25,000 households in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms impacted the state, generating wind gusts reaching 109km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Destruction

Residents reported large ice chunks as large as 7cm in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that multiple regions across Queensland had been affected by large hailstones.

Emergency crews were attempting to repair energy supply throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams deployed to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

Meanwhile, around one thousand households in the southern state also encountered energy failures after Melbourne recorded its heaviest rainfall in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations handled 598 emergency reports across the state, mainly for structural issues but also for downed trees and water accumulation.

  • Hoppers Crossing - numerous emergency calls
  • Wyndham region - nearly 180 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, over 28,000 energy customers in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were predicted to continue along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this week as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

Tomorrow was expected to become the most rainy day, with ongoing storm activity expected across various areas of both states.

Medical Alert

Health officials alerted that there was an higher risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.
