Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
