The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
